HOKIES OUSTED IN METRO

Virginia Tech was eliminated from the Metro Conference baseball tournament with two straight losses Thursday, losing 6-2 decision to Virginia Commonwealth and falling 4-2 to Tulane.

Mike Bell had three hits and knocked in the go-ahead run in a five-run seventh inning to lead VCU (27-25) to victory over Tech in the afternoon.

Tulane catcher Larry Schneider slugged a three-run homer in the sixth inning to send the Hokies packing in the second game.

Ken Nonamaker had a two-run homer for the Hokies in the first game. Bo Durkac set a Metro Tournament single-game record with three doubles in the second game, and Dee Dalton hit his 14th home run of the season.

Division III

\ Guilford 1, Ferrum 0: Ferrum pitcher Billy Wagner walked the first batter he faced and it came back to haunt him as Guilford defeated the Panthers 1-0 in the first round of the NCAA Division III baseball tournament in Rocky Mount, N.C. After Bron Thompson walked in the Guilford first and stole second, Mark Young singled him in. Ferrum (21-9) plays Methodist today at noon.
