They will be inducted Aug. 5, bringing to 42 the number of men and women so honored. The names of those chosen before this year are inscribed on one of the Wall of Honor plaques erected at Withers Park in Wytheville and scheduled to be dedicated May 30.
The new inductees are:
Hal Absher, whose skill on the George Wythe High School basketball court in the mid-1960s earned him a scholarship to Hampden-Sydney College;
Frank "Toar" Spraker, who played football at Wytheville High School in the 1930s and later at Milligan College. He also coached in Buchanan County;
Garland "Butch" Lowder, who lettered in several sports at Wytheville High in the 1940s and played basketball and tennis at Tennessee Wesleyan College;
The Rev. Tom Sproule, who helped officiate football and basketball games in Wythe County for 40 years;
The late Rich Holbrook, a baseball player from Speedwell who went on to the professional ranks.
In other regional sports:
Paul Radford, a veteran of 41 racing seasons, leads the Late Model Stock Car points standings after the fifth week of action at New River Valley Speedway in Radford. The Ferrum driver, still seeking his first victory of the year, has a 14-point advantage over another seasoned veteran, Ronnie Thomas of Christiansburg.
Thomas takes three consecutive victories into Saturday night's Miller Genuine Draft/WPSK 200. Former Mid-Atlantic champion Johnny Rumley of Winston-Salem, N.C., has the other two LMSC wins.
Also on the card is a 35-lap feature for the Limited Sportsmen along with 25 laps for the Modified Mini, Mini and Pure Stock drivers. Admission is $8 for adults and $1 for children 10 and under. Time trials begin at 6:15 with the first green flag falling at 8 p.m.
There will be a meeting May 26 at the Salem Civic Center at 7 p.m. for anybody interested in joining the new Roanoke Valley Sports Club. For more information, call Dan Wooldridge at 389-7373 in Salem.
Ferrum's Matt Jordan is tied for 56th after three rounds of the NCAA Division III men's golf tournament at San Diego. Jordan's total of 237 leaves him 22 shots behind leader Ryan Jenkins of Methodist (N.C.) College heading into today's final round.
