The boy came to the Blacksburg Police Department about 11 a.m. Thursday with his father to report that he had been fondled by Sherman E. Reese, 55, of Roanoke.
The incident happened, the boy said, after Reese picked him up from his home at about 5:30 a.m. to accompany him to work at a construction job at Virginia Tech.
Reese was apparently a family friend, and the boy's mother had given permission for her son to accompany Reese to work, police said.
The boy dozed off and awoke in Blacksburg to find Reese fondling him, according to a police news release. After they had been on campus for a short while, Reese sent the boy to his car to retrieve an item. The boy drove the car to his father's house in Radford and told him what had happened.
A warrant was obtained charging Reese with taking indecent liberties with a minor, police said, but he committed suicide in Montgomery County before it could be served.
Capt. Tom Roseberry of the county sheriff's office said Reese used a revolver to kill himself. Reese was found near his brother's home in the Ironto section of the county.
Police said that besides a Roanoke address, Reese also owned property in the Elliston area.
