PANTHERS STAY ALIVE, 2-0

Ferrum right-hander Keith Mayhew pitched a three-hit shutout as the Panthers stayed alive in the NCAA Division III Southeast Regional baseball tournament with a 2-0 victory over Methodist (N.C.) on Friday.

Ferrum (22-9), a 1-0 loser to Guilford on Thursday, plays the Quakers again at noon today in the double-elimination tournament. The winner of that game plays at 4 p.m. against North Carolina Wesleyan which eliminated Methodist (28-10).

Mayhew, a sophomore, struck out 12 and walked three in improving to 9-1. He pitched out of a two-out bases-loaded jam in the second inning, then went on to retire 17 in a row, nine by strikeout.

"We got a great performance today from Keith Mayhew," Ferrum coach Abe Naff said. "This gives us a chance to play Saturday and a fighting chance to win it all."

Matt Boucher (7-2) held Ferrum scoreless until the eighth. Chad Maddox led off the inning with a double. The next batter, Jeremy Hill, doubled to right, scoring Maddox. One out later, Chris Holt singled home Hill.

Regional tournament winners advance to the Division III World Series at Battle Creek, Mich.
