MISS PUERTO RICO IS CROWNED MISS UNIVERSE

Dayanara Torres of Puerto Rico was chosen Friday as this year's Miss Universe out of a field of 79 beauty queens from around the world.

Paula Betancourt of Colombia was the first runner-up and Milka Chulina of Venezuela was chosen as second runner-up in a glittering ceremony broadcast to 175 nations.

The judges narrowed the field of 10 semi-finalists by first eliminating seven others.

Kenya Moore of the United States, Australia's Voni Dolfos, Leila Schuster of Brazil, Pavlina Barbukova of the Czech Republic, Tarja Smura of Finland, Namarta Shirodkar of India and Eugenia Santana of Spain were the first left behind.
