BIKE RACE GREAT FOR COMMUNITY

The citizens who turned out to witness the start of the ninth stage of the Tour DuPont last week were rewarded with a delightful educational and festive occasion.

The sight of hundreds of eager youngsters learning about things beyond their normal experience, the opportunity for folks of all ages to wander among the numerous exhibits and the excitement of international competition covered by national media - all on a beautiful spring day - made many of us grateful that we live in this special place.

We are indebted to those who gave the many hours of planning and hard work that made it all happen.

Special gratitude is due to Mike Matzuk, who initiated the effort and served as chairman of the event, to Ron Secrist, the town manager, whose support was outstanding and to the university personnel who provided the space and expertise for the many exhibits.

Those persons in the public school system, who recognized the educational potential and allowed their students to participate, also should be congratulated.

This event is one more example of what can be achieved when an innovative initiative receives the cooperation of the various components of our community.\ Hugh G. Campbell\ Chairman\ Blacksburg Town Bikeway\ /Walkway Advisory Committee
