MCGUIRE WINS FCS FEATURE

The third time was a charm for Roanoke's Tim McGuire.

Seven races into the 1993 Franklin County Speedway season, McGuire was in the running for just the third time. But midway through the 100-lap Late Model feature of Saturday night's Coca-Cola 300, McGuire took the lead from top qualifier Ronnie Newman and posted his first win of the year.

Former track champion Bobby Radford made a late charge at McGuire and placed second, two car-lengths behind. Lowe Smith finished a season-best third.

A collision on lap 25 involving Harvey Harrison, Dicky Wilson and Tracy Owen thinned the field. Owen was the only one of the three able to continue and he placed fifth.

McGuire had finished 11th and second in his other two FCS finishes this season.

McGuire's brother, Tony, a seven-time winner last year, also entered Saturday night's Late Model field, but dropped out early with mechanical problems and finished 13th.

Tommy Dean set a track record in qualifying and then outlasted Steve Lynch in their 25-lap Mini Stock showdown. Dean, with four wins, and Lynch with two, have won all but one of the Mini Stock races at FCS this season. John Hall was third.

Chuck Floyd jumped to an early lead and prevailed for the first time this year in the 25-lap Rookie race. Last week's winner, Josh Ingram finished second, and Steve Hurley, second in the points race, placed third.

In the Street Stock competition, Phillip VanDerVeer and Freddie Goff, 1-2 in the points standings, finished that way in the race. The win was VanDerVeer's fifth in seven tries. Leon Dalton was third.

The Pure Stock and Any Car races were run later.
