OBIT BANNISTER, ELVIRA JOHNSON

BANNISTER, Elvira Johnson, 100, of Christiansburg, daughter of the late James Anderson and Louvena Johnson, passed away May 20, 1993, at the Montgomery Regional Hospital, Blacksburg. She was born March 23, 1893, in Farmville, Va. On June 16, 1914, she married Gratton William Bannister. To this union, 6 children were born. She was preceded in death by her husband and her son, William G. Bannister. She joined Green Creek Newsite Baptist Church in Prince Edward County at an early age. After her marriage, she moved her membership to Shaffer Memorial Baptist Church in Christiansburg, and was a faithful member until her death. She was a member of the choir, senior usher board, and the Women's Willing Workers Club. She was also a member of the NAACP, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, where she received numerous awards, and the Friendship Garden Club. She is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Sadie Morris, Mrs. Hattie Dennis, Mrs. Virginia Carr, and Mrs. Annie Jones, all of Christiansburg, Mrs. Katherine Robinson, Providence, R.I.; one sister, Mrs. Emma Young, Roanoke; one son-in-law, Mr. Willie Jones, Christiansburg; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Ora Anderson Brown, Roanoke, and Mrs. Mazella Crouse, Salisbury, N.C.; eight grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be Tuesday, 2 p.m. at the Shaffer Memorial Baptist Church, Christiansburg with the Rev. Lee Suggs officiating. Burial will be at the Shaffer Memorial Cemetery, Christiansburg. The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the church. Claytor-Alexander and Penn Funeral Home are in charge of arrangements.
