BURGES, STALEY FINALISTS

Three former Virginia women's basketball players are finalists for two U.S. national teams, the university announced Sunday.

Center Heather Burge, a 1993 graduate, and guard Dawn Staley, a 1992 graduate, are among the 17 finalists for the 12-member USA Basketball Women's World Championship Qualifying Tournament team. Center Heidi Burge, Heather's twin and also a 1993 graduate, is one of 19 finalists for the 12-member World University Games team.

The finalists are competing in a mini-camp that runs today through Thursday at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The World Championship Qualifying Team is scheduled to be announced during a training camp at Stanford University June 14-25; the World University Games team is scheduled to be announced during a camp June 25 to July 7 in Colorado Springs.

In Richmond, tournament MVP Cam Browder had three hits and scored twice to spark UNC Charlotte to a 13-6 victory over Virginia Commonwealth for the Metro Conference baseball tournament championship.

The 49ers (26-30) had to defeat the Rams (30-27) twice Sunday, winning the opener 7-3. It was the first time UNC Charlotte won the championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

In the second game, Virginia Commonwealth closed to within 6-4 in the top of the sixth inning. The 49ers sent 11 to bat and scored seven runs in the bottom of the inning with two-run doubles by Rob Price and Andy Bovender. Chris Helms also knocked in two runs for UNC Charlotte.

Rams starter Mike Ketterman (6-5) allowed four runs in 1 innings. Rob Grimes led Virginia Commonwealth with three hits and two runs. Mike Bell and Erik Sauve each knocked in two.

Mike Lovelace (3-8) went the distance for the 49ers, allowing 13 hits and striking out three.

UNC Charlotte catcher Kelly Skeens tied the tournament record of 13 hits held by Mike Fuentes of Florida State since 1981 and Dale Logan of Memphis State since 1980.

In the earlier game, Joey Anderson had three hits and scored three runs to lead the 49ers. Anderson led off the game with an infield hit and eventually scored on a single by Skeens. The 49ers added two runs in the second on a triple by Dwayne Deatherage, a sacrifice fly by Eric Little and a home run by Anderson.

UNC Charlotte scored Bovender's sacrifice fly in the third and picked up three runs in the fifth on an RBI single by Helms, a walk to Price and a fielder's choice by Brian VandenHeuvel.

Jeff Myers (4-5) went the distance for the 49ers, scattering eight hits and striking out two.

Buff Hochman (1-5) was the loser for the Rams. Grimes led Virginia Commonwealth with two hits and two runs batted in. Virginia Commonwealth tied the score at 1 in the first inning, then couldn't get closer than 4-2.
