Steve Davidson, president of the SPCA's board of directors, said Roanoke animal control officers, who have an office in the same building, discovered the theft Sunday morning.
"Apparently, someone broke in sometime between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.," Davidson said. "Someone broke in and made off with our safe."
Davidson said the safe contained $800-1,400 from adoption fees, donations and fees the SPCA collects on behalf of municipalities, he said.
The theft followed the society's "Walk for the Animals," an annual fund-raiser that took place on Saturday.
"There may have been some communication as to how much we had earned," said Davidson, who was not sure how much money was raised. "But that money had already been deposited in the bank."
Davidson said the office building has no security system because "we don't really have any need to."
Roanoke police have received a report and are investigating the burglary, a department spokesman said.
