TEACHER OF THE WEEK

Joan Starkey likes to think of herself as an organized person. The dedication she has to her job shows in her nightly planning sessions and the preparation undertaken before she enters the classroom.

"I stress organization, and I try to come to class well prepared," she said. "I hope it rubs off on my pupils." Starkey said she believes it is important for her pupils to be organized because it boosts their classroom performance. "Organization helps develop good study habits. It helps them make better grades and makes them feel better about themselves," she said.

Starkey, who has taught for 17 years, also believes in rewarding her pupils. "On Friday, we always have special activities. They're fun, and I look forward to that," said one of the pupils who nominated her. Among the rewards given to pupils who have done their work and exhibited good behavior are extra time outside or hearing a guest speaker.

Married and the mother of 7-year-old Mary Beth, Starkey enjoys music and reading.
