A BURST OF HOME CONSTRUCTION IN ROANOKE COUNTY

A burst of home construction in Roanoke County and a plant expansion boosted the statistic measuring building permits in the Roanoke Valley Economic Index.

Valley governments issued permits last month totaling just over $15 million in value. Nearly $3 million of that amount was recorded in Salem for a previously announced expansion of the Yokohama Tire Corp. plant.

Roanoke County issued 244 building permits in April out of the valley's total of 566.

A spokeswoman in the county building office said that is about twice the usual number of permits. She said practically all of them were for residential construction. - Staff report
