SOUTHERN CONFERENCE HONORS TOP MAN, WOMAN

Marshall senior football player Michael Payton was voted male athlete of the year in the Southern Conference and Appalachian State senior track and field competitor Melissa Morrison was chosen female athlete of the year at an honors dinner in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

VMI won the D.S. McAlister Award for the sixth straight year. The award goes to the school that exhibits the highest degree of sportsmanship, ethics and courtesy among players, coaches and spectators in the conduct of its athletic program. McAlister served as the Southern Conference's secretary-treasurer for 38 years.
