CAVALIERS WIN BLUE RIDGE SOFTBALL TITLE

At Walrond Park, Janell Sowers settled down to pitch a dominating three-hitter as Lord Botetourt defeated Salem 3-1 in a playoff softball game that determined the Blue Ridge District regular-season champion.

The district tournament begins today, and both teams will receive a bye to Thursday's semifinals. The Cavaliers are seeded No. 1, and Salem is No. 2.

Sowers gave up three first-inning singles, then retired 17 straight Spartans before allowing a seventh-inning walk. Ashley Moore and Mandy Sowers each had two hits for Lord Botetourt and Sowers, the shortstop, led an outstanding defensive effort by the Cavaliers.

\ BOYS' TENNIS: Mike Burns of Potomac defeated Andrew Thomas of Patrick Henry 6-1, 6-1 in the Northwest Region singles final in Woodbridge to advance to the state meet. In other action at Hylton High School, William Fleming's doubles team of Albert Collier and Roderick Allen were eliminated in the semifinals 5-7, 6-0, 7-6 (7-3) by a team from Woodbridge. In team competition today, Cave Spring takes on Hylton and E.C. Glass faces Woodbridge.

Galax and Glenvar each posted a shutout semifinal victory to set up a Region C team championship matchup today at 9 a.m. in Galax. Glenvar's Highlanders routed Floyd, and the Maroon Tide rolled past George Wythe.

In the individual semifinals, Glenvar's Nick Varney advanced with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Giles' Rusty Newby and Floyd's Frank Turpin defeated Nghia Yong of George Wythe 6-3, 6-1. Varney will play Turpin today at 1 p.m.

In doubles semifinals, Turpin and Evan Arno beat Bart Melton and Chris Kaase of George Wythe 6-3, 6-1 and Varney and Eric Starkloff dispatched Newby and Jason Borillo of Giles 6-4, 6-2. The doubles final will follow the singles today.

\ BASEBALL: At Daleville, Donnie Meador knocked in Jack Johnson with one out in the seventh inning as Lord Botetourt defeated Rockbridge County 2-1 in the first round of the Blue Ridge District tournament. Johnson scored both runs for the Cavaliers. Billy Arthur picked up the win in relief and sophomore Gary Tyree picked up the tough loss after pitching 6 innings. Botetourt will meet William Byrd in Vinton on Wednesday morning in the semifinals.

At Buchanan, Keith Bryant pitched a complete-game six-hitter, striking out 11 and walking one, as James River defeated Craig County 6-3 in the first round of the Pioneer District tournament. Eddie Miller had two doubles, three runs scored and an RBI for the Knights, and Jodie Steger added three RBI on two hits.

At Hot Springs, third-seeded Bath County (10-6) defeated sixth-seeded Parry McCluer 15-9 in the Pioneer District Tournament. Bath County plays top-seeded Glenvar at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Casey Field in Covington.

At Northside, Tommy Lee pitched a complete-game victory as Salem beat Northside 11-4 in the first round of the Blue Ridge District tournament.

\ SOCCER: At Cave Spring, Brian MacFarlane scored the final two of his three goals in the first 17 minutes of the second half as Stonewall Jackson of Manassas pulled away from a halftime tie for a 4-2 win over Cave Spring in the first round of the Northwestern Region tournament. Tom Bibby and Jimmy Garcerant each scored a goal for the Knights, who lost 20-goal scorer Bobby Warnick three minutes into the game. Warnick bruised his right hip and could not return.

At Bedford, Martinsville and Northside advanced to the semifinals of the Region III tournament with opening-round victories. The Bulldogs (12-5) beat Brookville (10-6) 4-1 and Northside (8-7-2) edged Bassett (4-10-1) 2-1. In the semifinals at Liberty on Wednesday night, Martinsville will play William Byrd and Northside will meet Jefferson Forest.

At Cave Spring, Mindy Reese scored two of her team's four unanswered goals as Hylton defeated Cave Spring 4-2 in the first round of the Northwestern Region tournament. The Knights finished 11-2-2. Hylton22-4 Cave Spring11-2
