GRADUATIONS COMING, AND NEW LIVES AFTER

The soap opera title "Days of Our Lives" and the adage "Today is the first day of the rest of your life" can be combined neatly for a particularly suitable theme this time of year.

Students with a dozen years of schooling, which have contributed significantly to defining who they are and what they will become, don caps and gowns for high school graduation and then begin a new chapter in the rest of the days of their lives.

Baccalaureate services and graduation ceremonies will be held according to the schedule below:

\ Auburn High School: Baccalaureate, June 13, 2 p.m. in the auditorium; graduation, June 17, 8 p.m. in the gymnasium.

\ Blacksburg High School: Baccalaureate, June 13, 2 p.m. in the high-school auditorium; graduation, June 16, 8 p.m. in Burruss Hall auditorium at Virginia Tech.

\ Christiansburg High School: Baccalaureate, June 13, 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium; graduation, June 16, 8 p.m. in the gymnasium.

\ Floyd High School: Graduation, June 12, 8 p.m.

\ Giles High School: Graduation, June 11, 8 p.m.

\ Narrow High School: Graduation, June 11, 7 p.m.

\ Pulaski County High School: Graduation, June 10, 7:59 p.m., Kenneth Dobson Stadium.

\ Radford High School: Graduation, June 19, 3 p.m., Preston Auditorium at Radford University.

\ Shawsville High School: Baccalaureate, June 13, 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium; graduation, June 17, 8 p.m. in the gymnasium.

On Thursday at 7:30 p.m. SPRING CONCERTS will be held at two high schools. The Blacksburg High School bands will perform in their high school auditorium. The Blacksburg Middle School advanced band will perform a combined selection, and school band alumnae have been invited to join the bands in "Stars and Stripes Forever."

At the Radford High School auditorium, the Dalton Intermediate School and Radford High School choirs will perform. Admission is $1. Call Lois Castonguay at 639-0430 for more information.

A CAREER DAY is being held at Elliston-Lafayette Elementary School on Friday from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Bill Meck from WSLS Channel 10 in Roanoke will discuss broadcasting, and 16 other career options will be presented.

Students also participate in field-day athletics and other activities.

The football team at Blacksburg High School will hold its annual BARBECUE CHICKEN SUPPER on Saturday in the commons at the high school from 5 to 7:30 p.m. The menu includes one half barbecue chicken, cole slaw, potato chips, bread, dessert and drink. The price is $4 per plate, and take-out will be available.

The Christiansburg-Blacksburg Rotary Club honored 11 outstanding vocational education students for exemplary achievements in their chosen fields and bestowed the Code of Ethics awards on eight students chosen by their peers and teachers.

Recipients of the VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AWARDS are Sherry Pillars, Crystal Martin and April Peyton from Auburn High School; Karen Cook of Blacksburg High School; Patricia Akers, Sherry Bourne, David Linkous, Sarah Reed and Kevin Bennett from Christiansburg High School; and Sherri Brown and Amy Short of Shawsville High School.

\ CODE OF ETHICS AWARDS were given to Andrew Burns Johnson and Rhonda Sue Lytton of Auburn High School; Alexandra Kasia Butterfield and Robert Charles Susil of Blacksburg High School; William Shannon Greer and Julie Michelle Smith of Christiansburg High School; Robert Lane Campbell and Amy Dawn Short of Shawsville High School.

\ VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED to help with the construction of the McHarg Elementary School playground addition. On June 5, 20 volunteers are needed to build platforms and walkways, and on June 12, 20 volunteers will sand and finish the project and place mulch. Three volunteers are needed for refreshments each Saturday. Work times are 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Call 639-1413 for more information.

\ CHRISTINE MILES, a sixth-grader at Community Christian Academy, recently was honored by Johns Hopkins University Center for talented youths. She was among the highest scorers in Virginia on the verbal and quantitative sections of the Secondary School Admission Test.

Christine is the daughter of Alan and Sheila Miles of Christiansburg.

The ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVE DISORDER SUPPORT GROUP will meet Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Gilbert Linkous School library in Blacksburg. A pediatric neurologist will talk about medications for the disorder.

\ SPORTS PHYSICALS for Dalton Intermediate and Radford High students who plan to participate in a school sport during the 1993-94 school year will be conducted today and June 1 at Radford High School.

Exams will begin at 6 p.m. for girls and 7 p.m. for boys.

Students must bring a Virginia High School League form signed by a parent. There is no charge.

Auburn High School senior ERIC AKERS took first place in the state vocational program contest for the cabinetmaking competition.

Special presentations are an important aspect of learning at BETHEL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. Dean Crane, outdoor supervisor for Blacksburg Parks and Recreation, recently presented an outdoor program on litter and pollution to first-graders, and he held a discussion about endangered animals.

Bill Meck, staff meteorologist for WSLS-TV 10, explained about weather to Sonora Pauley's fourth-grade classes.

The school celebrated Author Day with Lou Kassem, a local writer, visiting and speaking with all grades on ideas for stories and being an author.
