RIBBONS PROMOTE HOLIDAY SAFETY

Local police and sheriff's department cruiser and emergency-vehicle antennas will sport red, white and blue ribbons during Memorial Day weekend. The highway-safety reminder program is sponsored by various local law enforcement agencies in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles.

The ribbons are supposed to remind drivers to fasten safety belts and not to drink and drive.

Montgomery County Sheriff Ken Phipps said that motorists who don't use seat belts and alcohol and drug-impaired drivers are the leading causes of traffic deaths and injuries.

The ribbon campaign began Monday and will continue for a week.
