NEGRO LEAGUE PLAYERS PART OF ALL-STAR WEEK

When Leon Day pitched for the Baltimore Elite Giants in the 1930s and '40s, he only dreamed of playing in a ballpark like Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Although past his playing days, he and other members of the old Negro leagues will be honored as part of the week-long celebration leading to the 64th All-Star Game on July 13 in Baltimore.

"If they had ballparks like this when I played, I'd still be playing," said Day, sporting his old jersey and cap at the announcement of All-Star Week at Camden Yards.

"A lot of places, we couldn't get a hotel room and a lot of places we couldn't get anything to eat. We had to go to the grocery store and get bologna, a loaf of bread and a bottle of milk or some cheese.

"I saw a lot of good ballplayers who weren't allowed to play in the major leagues. This is going to be great."

Day and other Negro league players will be on hand for just one of the attractions in conjunction with the first-ever All-Star Week. They will sign autographs and be honored July 10 at the White Sox-Orioles game.

The week-long celebration culminating with the All-Star Game will create $5 million, and possibly much more, for Baltimore and the surrounding areas, according to Maryland Gov. William Donald Schaefer.

All-Star Week, the brainchild of Orioles President Larry Lucchino, will feature a FanFest, a StreetFest, musical attractions and other events beginning July 8 and ending July 13. The city is expecting more than 100,000 people to attend the week's attractions.

The FanFest will feature autograph opportunities with more than 125 players, video batting cages and the largest memorabilia collection ever on loan from the Baseball Hall of Fame.
