The Smithfield Cos. Inc. of Portsmouth, a specialty foods producer and parent of Bunker Hill Foods of Bedford, said it earned a record $1.38 million for its fiscal year ended March 31, up 18 percent from the prior year. The company reported record sales of $38.7 million, up from $37 million. Earnings were 89 cents per share.

Hechinger
Hechinger Co., Landover, Md.-based hardware chain with a store in Roanoke, on Tuesday reported first-quarter net earnings of $3.2 million, or 8 cents per share, on revenues of $481.6 million, compared to a net loss of $51 million, or $1.22 per share, on revenues of $443 million in the 1992 quarter. Sales were $479.1 million, up 9 percent from $439.9 million. Comparable-store sales were down 3 percent.
At the end of the quarter, the company was operating a total of 122 home center stores: 50 traditional Hechinger stores, 21 Hechinger Home Project Centers, 45 Home Quarters Warehouse stores and six Triangle Building Centers.
\ Rowe Furniture
Rowe Furniture Corp., Arlington-based manufacturer with operations in Salem, said it expects net shipments of about $20.5 million for its second quarter, ending May 30, up 14 percent from $18 million in the 1992 period. Rowe said it expects earnings for the quarter to be about 16 cents per share, compared with 2 cents per share a year earlier. Earnings per share reflect a three-for-two stock split paid on Jan. 15.
