JOBLESS CLAIMS DOWN IN VA.

Mild weather and fewer layoffs in the textile industry held down the number of initial claims for unemployment benefits in April to the lowest level for that month in four years, the Virginia Employment Commission reported Tuesday.

The claims figure dropped 11.4 percent to 25,818 in April, the VEC said. The figure, reflecting an improving economy, was 2,754 below the number of initial claims in the year-earlier period. - Staff report
