HOUSE APPROVES USING U.S. FORCE IN SOMALIA

Six months after the Marines landed in Somalia, the House on Tuesday authorized the U.S. military presence there and sanctioned use of force by American troops participating in the U.N. peacekeeping mission.

The resolution on use of U.S. armed forces in Somalia passed 243-179. It met opposition from Republicans unhappy with a provision setting a one-year, renewable, limit for U.S. involvement in the U.N. operation that took over from the U.S. command three weeks ago.

"It's time now for our forces to come home," said Rep. Benjamin Gilman, R-N.Y., who proposed an amendment limiting U.S. military presence to six months. The amendment was defeated 248-179.

The House rejected another amendment, by Rep. Toby Roth, R-Wis., that would have ended all troop participation in and U.S. financial contributions to the U.N. peacekeeping mission on June 30.
