RESCUE CREW GETS OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE

The Pulaski County Board of Supervisors has appointed a four-member oversight committee to help the Pulaski County Life Saving Crew work out its financial problems.

The committee members are Dr. David Stanley, Dr. Dixon Williams, former Sheriff Frank Conner and accountant A.J. Smith Jr.

The appointments followed a closed session Monday night lasting about 90 minutes.

The board also approved an additional appropriation of $9,000 to the Life Saving Crew to cover its unpaid debts.

The Life Saving Crew currently has two outstanding bills.

It owes about $6,900 to Zimmerman Evans Fire Supplies for gear it had purchased, and $1,900 for a final painting of its light crash rescue truck.

The crew has been able to raise about $4,000 to pay operating expenses for the month of May.

Its financial problems became known to the supervisors last month after county officials got a bank query about the crew's overdrawn account.

The shortage is under investigation.

The oversight committee will be asked for recommendations to ensure adequate accounting, bonding and auditing practices by the organization.

It will have the further responsibility of making sure these practices are in place for all fire and rescue organizations that get contributions from the county.
