WHEN GALAXIES COLLIDE, HUBBLE GETS PICTURES

The Hubble Space Telescope has taken an unusual snapshot of a cosmic traffic accident: a violent collision between two galaxies with the resultant creation of luminous clusters of young stars.

Researchers described the image Tuesday as the best glimpse yet of what they believe may be a common process in the universe as swirling spiral galaxies like our own Milky Way merge into giant, egg-shaped elliptical galaxies.
