FIELDALE-COLLINSVILLE ADVANCES IN BASEBALL

Brant Engstrom pitched Fieldale-Collinsville out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth inning and the Cavaliers held on for a 3-2 home victory over Laurel Park in the first round of the Piedmont District baseball tournament Tuesday.

Engstrom struck out one batter and coaxed another into a pop-up to end the inning. His double in the fourth inning also tied the score 2-2. Brian Alley doubled to lead off the sixth inning for the Cavaliers (16-2-1) and, after an Eric Craig bunt single, scored on an error.

Fieldale-Collinsville plays Magna Vista or Chatham in the second round.

In other baseball:

At Hot Springs, third-seeded Bath County (10-6) used 15 hits and two big innings to defeat sixth-seeded Parry McCluer 15-9 in the Pioneer District Tournament on Monday. Bath County scored seven runs in the second inning. Parry McCluer (5-13) pulled to 7-4 in the third and 7-6 in the fifth, but the Chargers put it away with eight runs in the fifth. Bath County pitcher Jon Rodgers (7-0) got the victory. Bath County plays top-seeded Glenvar at 5 p.m. today at Casey Field in Covington.

\ SOFTBALL: At Hot Springs, Bath County (7-6) romped over Craig County 22-4 in the Pioneer District tournament Tuesday and set up a meeting with Glenvar in the semifinals Thursday at Hercules Field in Covington.

The Chargers wrapped it up with 10 runs in the second inning. Pitchers Michelle Woodzell and Belinda Persinger allowed only one hit by Craig County's Teanna Francisco in the second. Bath County had 20 hits, with Pam Robertson and Chrissy Hiner each getting four.

At Alleghany, the Mountaineers used three hits to defeat Northside 5-2 in the first round of the Blue Ridge District tournament. Heather Crawford's single started a three-run rally in the fifth. Northside's Teresa Harris had two of her team's four hits. Alleghany faces Lord Botetourt at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the Moyer Complex in Salem.

Sarah Hudson's grand slam in the third inning highlighted a 22-0 William Byrd victory over visiting Rockbridge County in the first round of the Blue Ridge District tournament. The Terriers (12-5) take on Salem next at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the Moyer Complex.

\ GIRLS' TENNIS: At Kingsport, Tenn., Myra Stevenson of Richlands defeated Nicole Ness of Lee County 6-3, 6-4 for the Region IV girls tennis title and Nan Morefield and Emilie Collins of Abingdon won the doubles title with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Radford's Cathy Richardson and Ashleigh Funk. The winners go to the state tournament June 2-3 in Winchester. Gate City defeated Richlands 8-1 in team competition.

At the VMI courts in Lexington, Kelly Kiser of Lebanon defeated Donna Boyd of Floyd County 6-3, 6-1 for the Region C singles title. Lebanon defeated Giles 7-2 for the team title. The doubles title went to Kiser and Amber Fuller who defeated Boyd and Cheri Quessenberry 6-3, 6-0. The winners play in the state tournament at Wilson Memorial High School in Fisherville on June 2-3.

\ BOYS' TENNIS: Defending Group A state champion Glenvar rolled past host Galax 9-0 to win the Region C title. The Highlanders will defend their state title when they play at J.J. Kelly in Wise on Wednesday and Thursday, June 2-3. The individual singles and doubles championships were rained out and rescheduled for today at Floyd County. \
