PFEIL, BLACKSBURG ROMP IN BOYS' TENNIS

Blacksburg knocked off Virginia High 6-3 and the Indians' Marek Pfeil took the singles title with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Aaron Thompson in the Region IV boys' tennis finals at Radford's Dedmon Center and the Virginia Tech courts Tuesday.

Pfeil and Robert Gibb defeated Thompson and Chad Jones 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) for the doubles title. Blacksburg plays Salem on June 2 at the Salem Civic Center in the state semifinals.

In other boys' tennis:

Defending Group A state champion Glenvar rolled past host Galax 9-0 to win the Region C title. The Highlanders will defend their state title when they play at J.J. Kelly in Wise on June 2-3. Rain forced the individual singles and doubles to be played today.

\ GIRLS' TENNIS: At Kingsport, Tenn., Nan Morefield and Emilie Collins of Abingdon won the Region IV doubles title with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Radford's Cathy Richardson and Ashleigh Funk. The winners go to the state tournament June 2-3 in Winchester. At the VMI courts in Lexington, Kelly

Kiser of Lebanon defeated Donna Boyd of Floyd County 6-3, 6-1 for the Region C singles title. Lebanon defeated Giles 7-2 for the team title. The doubles title went to Kiser and Amber Fuller who defeated Boyd and Cheri Quessenberry 6-3, 6-0. The winners play in the state tournament at Wilson Memorial High School in Fisherville on June 2-3. \

BASEBALL: At Pulaski, Mike Smith hit 2-for-3 with one run and two RBI as top-seeded Giles defeated Floyd County 8-4 in the semifinals of the Mountain Empire District tournament. The Spartans scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and built a 6-0 lead before the Buffaloes could score. Mitch Reed pitched a complete game for Giles (13-5). Floyd finished 11-7.

In the other semifinal, second-seeded Grayson County downed Fort Chiswell 2-1. The Pioneers led 1-0 after one inning, but the Blue Devils rallied to score twice in the fourth. Matthew Campbell (5-0) allowed four hits and struck out 11 for Grayson County (12-6). B.W. Hill gave up five hits and struck out 11 for Fort Chiswell (12-7).

Giles and Grayson County will play for the title tonight at 7 in Pulaski. Both teams advance to the Region C tournament.

\ SOFTBALL: At Hot Springs, Bath County (7-6) romped over Craig County 22-4 in the Pioneer District tournament and set up a meeting with Glenvar in the semifinals Thursday at Hercules Field in Covington. Pitchers Michelle Woodzell and Belinda Persinger allowed only one hit, by Craig County's Teanna Francisco.

At Pamplin, pitcher Katie Philips went 2-for-3 with two runs, a double and a triple as Rustburg downed Jefferson Forest 5-0 in the semifinals of the Seminole District tournament. Philips also threw a four-hitter and struck out 13 for the Devils (19-1). Jefferson Forest finished 12-7-1. Rustburg will face Brookville, which defeated William Campbell 6-2, in the finals.
