FLEMING EDGES PH 9-8 IN RVD BASEBALL

Eddie Jones was 3-for-4 and scored three runs as William Fleming defeated Patrick Henry 9-8 in the first round of the Roanoke Valley District baseball tournament at the Colonels' diamond Tuesday.

Mike Souma was was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two stolen bases for William Fleming (6-12), which takes on Cave Spring in the second round at 11 a.m. on Friday at Calfee Park in Pulaski. Jason Morris added a home run in the top of the sixth inning.

Greg Duncan (2-5) earned the victory, giving up one hit in four innings, and Al Holland Jr. struck out three in three innings of relief.

For the Patriots (2-16), Jeremy Bailey hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning and Corey Plunkett added a bases-clearing double.

\ SOFTBALL: At Hot Springs, Bath County (7-6) romped over Craig County 22-4 in the Pioneer District tournament and set up a semifinal meeting with Glenvar at Hercules Field in Covington on Thursday. Pitchers Michelle Woodzell and Belinda Persinger allowed only one hit, by Craig County's Teanna Francisco. Bath County had 20 hits, with Pam Robertson and Chrissy Hiner each getting four.

At Alleghany, the Mountaineers used three hits to defeat Northside 5-2 in the first round of the Blue Ridge District tournament. Heather Crawford's single started a three-run rally in the fifth. Northside's Teresa Harris had two of her team's four hits. Alleghany faces Lord Botetourt at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the Moyer Complex in Salem.

Sarah Hudson's grand slam in the third inning highlighted a 22-0 William Byrd victory over visiting Rockbridge County in the first round of the Blue Ridge District tournament. The Terriers (12-5) take on Salem next at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the Moyer Complex.

Three Terriers combined to pitch a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts. Deanna Aldrich (9-2) threw three innings, striking out five, to earn the win. Lynn Stohler was also 1-for-2 with three runs scored and two RBI.

Bobbie Jo Wright pitched a one-hit shutout as Glenvar triumphed over James River 2-0 to win a playoff that determined the Pioneer District regular-season champion on Tuesday at Walrond Park.

Wright (8-3) gave up a single to Cara Mundy, the second batter of the game, before settling down to help the Highlanders earn the first seed in the district tournament, which begins Thursday in Covington.

Amy VonDerHofen singled in both runs for Glenvar in the sixth inning. The Highlanders (12-5, 10-1) also got outstanding defensive help from second baseman Kelly Winter.

James River (15-3, 9-2) will be the tournament's second seed.

At Pamplin, pitcher Katie Philips went 2-for-3 with two runs, a double and a triple as Rustburg downed Jefferson Forest 5-0 in the semifinals of the Seminole District tournament. Philips also threw a four-hitter and struck out 13 for the Devils (19-1). Jefferson Forest finished 12-7-1. Rustburg will face Brookville, which defeated William Campbell 6-2, in the finals.

\ SOCCER: At Woodbridge on Monday night, Patrick Henry was shut out by the Vikings 3-0 in a Group AAA Northwestern Region first-round game. John Atkins got the shutout for Woodbridge. Patrick Henry ended the season at 7-7-4.

\ BOYS' TENNIS: Defending Group A state champion Glenvar rolled past host Galax 9-0 in boys' tennis to win the Region C title Tuesday. The Highlanders will defend their state title when they play at J.J. Kelly in Wise on June 2-3. Rain forced the individual singles and doubles to be played today at Floyd County. At Dumfries, E.C. Glass defeated Woodbridge 8-1 and Hylton downed

Cave Spring 6-3 in the semifinals of the Northwest Region boys' tennis tournament. No. 5 Bill Rawlings of Cave Spring defeated Jason Weller 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 to complete the season undefeated. He finished 14-0. E.C. Glass will play Hylton for the title today. \
