Carson, who retired from NBC's "Tonight" show a year ago, made the rare public appearance at a luncheon in New York City. He received an award from the nonprofit Center for Communication, which stages seminars on media issues for college students.
Referring to Clinton's pricey trim last week by Beverly Hills stylist Cristophe, Carson wondered, "How can a populist go from a barber with three names to a guy with one?"
The luncheon drew top broadcasting, news and advertising figures, as well as former Carson sidekicks Ed McMahon, producer Fred De Cordova and even Skitch Henderson, who was the "Tonight" bandleader in the early 1960s.
Carson was introduced by "Nightline" anchorman Ted Koppel, who hailed the comic for "giving pleasure to millions, night after night, for 30 years. Some of us have trouble giving pleasure to one person a couple of times a month."
