Pickets to support injured Axton worker
The Concerned Citizens to Improve Workers Compensation Laws of Virginia plans informational picketing today at Brown Products in Axton in support of Loretta Shelton, who lost a hand in an accident at the corrugated packaging plant.
The picketing will focus on "injustice and it will forewarn employees" of the plant, said Anita Lawrence, head of the Martinsville-based organization. She said leaders of the group will hand out worker compensation information and tell people how to file claims and get benefits.
A deputy commissioner of the state Workers Compensation Commission denied Shelton's claim for benefits because he said she willfully violated safety rules by putting her hand in a machine. Her case has been appealed. The accident occurred a year ago. - Staff report

Makers offer guards for backyard swings
WASHINGTON - Three manufacturers of backyard swing sets are reissuing an offer of plastic guards for the handrails on certain playground slides that present a strangulation hazard, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Wednesday.
The problem is that strings from children's clothing may become entangled where the handrail attaches to the slides, the commission said.
The Hedstrom Corp. received a report that a 3-year-old girl had strangled when her mitten strings, which were strung through her coat, got caught.
The sets that can be fitted with guards are Hedstrom Big T; Blazon-Flexible Flyer T-Type Play Centers; and Sears T-style sets, which were made by Hedstrom, Blazon-Flexible Flyer and Turco.
To get a retrofit kit, call Hedstrom at 1-800-453-7077 or 1-800-233-3271; Blazon-Flexible Flyer Inc. at 1-800-521-6233; or Turco representatives at 1-800-228-8237. Turco went out of business in 1986. - Associated Press
