TECH COACH HEADS ALL-STATE BASEBALL TEAM

Virginia Tech coach Chuck Hartman and Old Dominion University first baseman/pitcher Geoff Edsell earned top honors on the Division I all-state baseball team chosen by the Virginia College Sports Information Directors.

Hartman was chosen coach of the year for the second consecutive season after guiding the Hokies to a 34-15 record and a tie for second place in the Metro Conference. Edsell earned player of the year honors.

Radford placed outfielder Duane Filchner (.401 avg., 57 RBI) and designated hitter Brian Pardue (.359 avg., 30 RBI) on the team, and pitcher Jamie Patteson (8-0, 3.65 ERA) represented Virginia Tech.

Virginia Tech sophomore Dee Dalton of Roanoke has been selected the third team shortstop on the Division I All-America baseball team by the staff of the Collegiate Baseball newspaper.

Steve Billings, who coached the Radford lacrosse team for three years, has resignedi, school officials said Wednesday.

"We appreciate Steve's hard work these last three for three years, and we wish him well as he pursues other career opportunites," athletic director Chuck Taylor said.

The Highlanders were 2-9 this spring - the worst record since the program joined NCAA Division I in 1984. The team compiled a 12-26 record under Billings, a 1987 Radford graduate.
