DEMONS, CARROLL COUNTY ADVANCE

At Hillsville, Carroll County and Christiansburg slugged their way to New River District semifinal victories. The Cavaliers smashed Radford 13-4 while the Demons dispatched Blacksburg 10-4.

For Carroll County, James Phillips hit a grand slam and Kevin DeHaven belted a two-run homer. Christiansburg got home runs from Brock Whitlock, Denny Selfe and Toby Duncan.

Carroll County (14-3) and Christiansburg (7-11) will meet Friday at 5 p.m. for the championship. Both teams will advance to the Region IV tournament.

At Calfee Park in Pulaski, Bobby Cheeks pitched a four-hitter, striking out nine, as Grayson County won the Mountain Empire District tournament championship with a 3-0 victory over regular-season champion Giles. Both teams advance to the Region C tournament, starting next week.

Scott Spencer was 3-for-4 wioth three RBI to lead Jefferson Forest to a 7-3 semifinal win over Brookville (15-5) in the Seminole District tournament at Altavista. The Cavaliers (16-4) face Amherst,a 7-3 winner over Appomattox, in the championship game Friday at 7 p.m. at Altavista.

BOYS' TENNIS: At Galax, Glenvar's Nick Varney advanced to state competition in both singles and doubles with a pair of Region C championship victories. Varney defeated Floyd's Frankie Turpin 6-0, 7-5 in a singles match, then teamed with Eric Starkloff to rout Turpin and Evan Arno 6-0, 6-1 in the doubles final.

SOCCER: At Bristol, Kevin McDowell, Jason Randolph and Arron Tuggle scored goals as Christiansburg shut out Virginia High 3-0 in a Region IV tournament semifinal game. The Demons qualified for the state tournament and will play at Blacksburg on Friday at 6:30 p.m. for the region title.

At Bedford, J.J. Larsen had a goal and an assist and Northside beat Jefferson Forest 3-1 in the semifinals of the Region III soccer tournament. The Vikings face William Byrd on Friday at Lord Botetourt High School for the region title and both teams will advance to the state tournament.

At Blacksburg, Ben Cherry had three goals and three assists as undefeated Blacksburg wiped out Marion 10-0 in a semifinal game of the Region IV tournament. The Indians (14-0-2) advanced to the region championship and qualified for the state tournament.
