NAVY SEAMAN RECRUIT TIMOTHY J. KEPPLE, son of Donald W. and Elaine S. Kepple of 5004 Youngwood Drive N.W., has completed recruit training at Great Lakes, Ill.

Kepple is a 1991 graduate of William Fleming High School.

\ MARINE PVT. EDWIN E. HAM, son of Cecil M. Otey of 129 Patton Ave., has completed recruit training in San Diego.

\ NAVY SEAMAN RECRUIT ROY L. WHITE, son of Clarence N. and Barbara J. White of 1455 Leon St., has completed recruit training at San Diego.

White is a 1991 graduate of William Fleming High School.

\ PETTY OFFICER 3RD CLASS GREGORY L. GRAY, son of Donald L. and Melanie J. Gray of Goodview, has reported for duty at Naval Air Station, San Diego.

Gray is a 1988 graduate of William Byrd High School.

\ NAVY PETTY OFFICER 3RD CLASS MATTHEW W. BEARD, son of Marshall D. and Nancy M. Beard of 2212 Timberview Road, is stationed aboard the destroyer USS O'Bannon, which recently was awarded the Secretary of the Navy's 1993 Environmental Quality Award for small ships.

Beard, a 1990 graduate of Northside High School, and his shipmates were praised for their efforts at environmental protection, including the ship's hazardous waste minimization program, plastics-at-sea awareness, fuel management afloat, oil spill prevention and recycling.

\ SGT. MAJ. JAMES R. BRYANT of 403 Howard Drive, Salem, has been promoted to his present rank while serving with 4th Combat Engineer Battalion, 4th Marine Division in Lynchburg.

Bryant is a 1962 graduate of Northside High School.

\ MARINE MAJ. STEVEN P. HAMMOND, son of Parris R. and H. Lois Hammond of 745 Glenmore Drive, Salem, has been promoted to his present rank while serving with Headquarters and Support Battalion at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Hammond is a 1977 graduate of Virginia Tech and received a law degree from Washington and Lee University in 1989.

\ SEAMAN ROY D. DeCOSTER, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Covell of 3633 Colonial Ave. S.W., was awarded the USO Award during recruit graduation ceremonies at Great Lakes Naval Training Command, Chicago.

The award is given to the graduating recruit whose enthusiasm, supportive attitude and willingness to help others during training exceeds Navy training standards. DeCoster is a graduate of Cave Spring High School.

\ NAVY PETTY OFFICER 2ND CLASS KEVIN L. PELLANT, a 1988 graduate of Salem High School, recently was sent on a six-month tour to the Mediterranean Sea aboard the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt, based in Norfolk.

Pellant joined the Navy in 1989.

\ MARINE PVT. MARVIN L. LOYD, son of Evelyn M. and Marvin L. Loyd Sr. of 2756 Creekside Drive, Salem, has completed recruit training at Parris Island, S.C.

Loyd is a 1991 graduate of Glenvar High School.
