HOLMES BACK AT UVA

The NCAA has ruled in favor of Virginia football player Larry Holmes, who will be allowed to count summer-school credits in his bid to regain his eligibility.

Holmes, who led the ACC in touchdown receptions two years ago, missed the 1992 season while on academic probation.

Although it was the school's intention to readmit Holmes for summer school, he needed an NCAA waiver to be eligible under the new "75-25" rule, which requires a student-athlete to obtain 75 percent of his hours in regular session.

Holmes, should he meet UVa requirements in summer school, would have two years of remaining eligibility. He started games on offense and defense in 1991, when he had 27 receptions and scored eight touchdowns after moving to wide receiver in the third game.

He also led the team in punt returns.

Holmes could not be reached for comment. The UVa football office was closed Thursday for the Memorial Day holiday.

"I think he'll go back with a little better attitude," said Dick Allanson, who coached Holmes at St. Albans School in Washington, D.C. "UVa didn't want him back unless he was going back as a serious candidate. They didn't want him to play for one year and then go to the pros."
