SLAIN CARDINAL MISTAKEN FOR DRUG LORD

The government said late Wednesday the bullets that killed a Mexican cardinal were intended for a drug trafficker, and offered $5 million for information leading to the capture of all those responsible.

Mexican Deputy Attorney General Antonio Garcia Torres said the gunmen were pursuing drug trafficker Joaquin Guzman Loera, known as "El Chapo Guzman," at the Guadalajara airport Monday.

But in the confusion of the shootout, the men confused the cardinal with their target, and killed him and his driver as the two sat in their car in the parking lot awaiting the arrival of a church official, Garcia Torres said.

Another five people were killed.

Authorities said they got most of their information about the shooting from Jesus Alberto Bayardo Robles, who was arrested in connection with the killings and who they said had confessed that he was among those hired to kill Guzman Loera. - Associated Press
