RICHMOND ECHL TEAM IS SOLD

Allan Harvie, the embattled owner of the Richmond Renegades, announced Thursday he has sold the East Coast Hockey League franchise to minor-league baseball impresario Dave Elmore.

The selling price was unannounced, but Harvie said it was "in excess of $1 million."

Elmore, who is keeping the club in Richmond, owns five minor-league baseball clubs and has rights to place an International Hockey League franchise in Denver. Elmore said at Thursday's news conference he hopes to retain head coach Roy Sommer, who went to Richmond after coaching the Roanoke Valley Rebels in 1991-92.

The sale ends Harvie's tumultuous three-year reign over the Renegades. The maverick owner sued the ECHL and Commissioner Pat Kelly last season after being fined $10,000 for breaking league roster rules; the two parties settled out of court. Harvie's Adanac Partnership Ltd. is being sued by a bus line for outstanding bills from last season. Harvie indicated Thursday he has plans to build a public ice-skating rink in Richmond.
