CRESTAR BANK BRANCH ROBBED

A man with a pistol robbed the Crestar Bank's Crossroads Mall branch shortly after 3:30 p.m. Thursday and then fled on foot, Roanoke police said.

Sgt. Stan Smith said the robber "displayed the gun, yelled obscenities and made threats against workers" and demanded money.

He didn't say how much money was taken. Police routinely do not reveal the amount of money taken in bank robberies.

Smith said there were no customers in the bank during the robbery, but there were "six or seven" workers on duty.

The bank did not reopen Thursday. A steady stream of customers drove up and then left after reading the preprinted sign: "Sorry we are closed due to robbery" with fill-in-the-blank lines for the name of the nearest Crestar branch.
