2 VALLEY NEWSPAPERS COMBINING OPERATIONS

The News Messenger and The News Journal, two New River Valley newspapers, will combine operations in July. The new paper will be called The News.

Both newspapers have been owned by Worrell Enterprises Inc. since 1980, but they have maintained separate staffs.

Mike Blanton, publisher of both newspapers, wouldn't comment on the merger, but a flier signed by the News Messenger circulation director, Mark Vaughn, was offering a six-month free sample of The News to new subscribers.

Blanton did say that the six-month sample was for households that don't now subscribe to either the News Messenger or The News Journal.

"It's simply a way to try and increase the circulation," he said.
