She was the widow of Stuart K. Cassell, former vice president of administration for Virginia Tech.
Cassell was an ardent supporter of Virginia Tech and was one of the founders of New Dimensions, an organization for retired Tech staff members and spouses. She served on the group's first advisory board for four years.
Cassell was active in civic and community groups. She had served on the board of Smithfield Plantation, and was active in a number of groups, including the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Junior and Intermediate Woman's clubs, and the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities.
She held numerous local, regional and state offices in the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs, including state historian from 1985-87 and vice chairwoman of the state convention in 1987. She was also a longtime member of the Blacksburg Presbyterian Church.
Cassell is survived by three sons, Dr. Stuart Kent Cassell Jr. of Blacksburg, Michael Neff Cassell of Waco, Texas, and Gerald Sidney Cassell of Richmond; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Helen N. Williams of Saltville and Patricia Furr of Chesterfield County; and a brother, Greek C. (Dick) Neff Jr. of Bronxville, N.Y.
A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday in Westview Cemetery by the Rev. Alfred Payne.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 tonight at McCoy Funeral Home in Blacksburg.
