OBIT CASSELL, CATHERINE NEFF

CASSELL, Catherine Neff, 78, of Blacksburg, died Wednesday, May 26, 1993. Mrs. Cassell was born at Rural Retreat, Virginia on August 27, 1914, to the late Greek Cassell and Lillian Cassell Neff. She was the widow of Stuart K. Cassell, past Vice-President of Administration for Virginia Tech, who preceded her in death. She was an ardent supporter of Virginia Tech and was a founding member of New Dimensions when it was expanded to include spouses as well as Tech retirees, serving on its Advisory Board. She was a special initiate of Zeta Tau Alpha, holding several offices in that sorority's alumni chapter. Active in civic and community affairs, she was a member of the D.A.R., the Junior and Intermediate Woman's Clubs, where she served as president. She was a member of the A.P.V.A., serving as a member of the Board of Smithfield Plantation. She was president of the Town and Country Garden Club in 1961 and again in 1979. She held numerous chairmanships in the Blue Ridge District of the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs and was president of that district in 1982-83. At the state level, she held several chairmanships and was state historian from 1985 to 1987. In that year she was Vice-Chairman of the V.F.G.C. State Convention. She was a long term member of the Blacksburg Presbyterian Church, where she served ten years as superintendent of the Children's Sunday School. Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Stuart Kent Jr., and Martha Cassell, Blacksburg, Michael Neff and Ann Cassell, Waco, Texas; Gerald Sidney and Linda Cassell, Richmond; seven grandchildren, Catherine Ellen Cassell, Dallas, Texas, Elizabeth Ann Cassell, Clear Lake, Texas, Michael Stuart Cassell, Waco, Texas, Ann Stuart Cassell, Blacksburg, John Stuart Cassell, Christopher Sharpe Cassell and Joseph Matthew Cassell, all of Richmond; two sisters, Helen Williams, Saltville, Va., and Patricia Furr, Richmond; one brother, Greek C. ("Dick") Neff Jr., Bronxville, New York. A graveside service will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, May 29, in Westview Cemetery, with the Rev. Alfred Payne officiating. The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home.
