SALEM WINS SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT

Salem won the Blue Ridge District softball tournament with a 6-3 victory over Lord Botetourt in the championship game at the Moyer Complex in Salem.

Michelle Harrison and Yo Helm combined to drive in all the runs for the Spartans (17-3). Rhonda Rankin was the winning pitcher, striking out seven and scattering five hits. Denise McNitt had two hits for the Cavaliers and Mandy Sowers contributed a triple.

Both teams advance to regional play Tuesday at Tunstall High School. Lord Botetourt plays at 5 p.m., and Salem plays at 7 p.m.

In the tournament semifinals, Salem defeated William Byrd 11-3 and Lord Botetourt downed Alleghany 12-8.

In other softball:

Melissa Markham drove in five runs and senior pitcher Sherrie Allison improved her career record to 23-4 as James River blasted Bath County 17-2 in a semifinal game of the Pioneer District tournament. The Knights (17-3) scored in five of six innings before the game was called because of the slaughter rule.
