Garren, now the associate dean of academic affairs, will begin his new duties July 1. He was selected from 188 candidates to replace Gerald Gibson, who is leaving to become president of Maryville College in Tennessee.
Garren, a graduate of William Fleming High School in Roanoke, holds a bachelor's degree in mathematics and physics from Roanoke College, a master's degree in mathematics from the College of William and Mary, and a doctorate in mathematics from Virginia Tech.
Garren taught math at Roanoke College for 17 years. Prior to teaching, he worked on the Apollo and Gemini space programs of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration at Langley Research Center.
Garren is a member of Roanoke's Pskov Sister City delegation and is a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves.
