JUDGES TO REVIEW VIRGINIA 177 ACCORD

The Virginia Supreme Court has named a panel of three circuit court judges to review the Virginia 177 agreement between Radford and Montgomery County.

Under the agreement, the county would share 27.5 percent of the tax revenue with Radford in return for the town's giving up annexation rights in the road corridor between Radford and Interstate 81.

The two jurisdictions also have agreed to cooperate on development along the corridor, where Radford Community Hospital has announced plans for a new building.

The city and county ratified the agreement in April and May and it has been approved by the Virginia Commission on Local Government. State law also requires the three-judge panel to give the agreement its blessing.

Chief judge of the panel is Circuit Court Judge Nicholas Persin of Grundy. Other members are Circuit Court Judge Charles McCormick III of Halifax and James L. Berry of Winchester.

Fred Hodnett, assistant executive secretary of the Supreme Court, said the two jurisdictions have asked that the judges complete their work by July 1. Hodnett said he did not know if the panel had set a meeting yet.
