GUNS SOON TO LEAD AS INJURY-DEATH CAUSE

With the explosion of gun violence in the United States, firearms soon will become the leading cause of injury deaths, surpassing motor vehicle accidents, the federal Centers for Disease Control says.

"If trends continue as they have in the past five years, firearms death rates will surpass motor vehicle death rates in the next two to three years," said Alex Crosbey, a CDC epidemiologist.

In 1990, firearms injuries accounted for 37,155 deaths in the U.S., ranking it as the eighth leading cause of death overall and second for injury deaths - after 46,814 motor vehicle accident fatalities, Crosbey said. - Knight-Ridder/Tribune
