WILDER TAKES STEPS TO BAN SOME WEAPONS

Gov. Douglas Wilder has ordered aides to draft a list of assault weapons he hopes will be banned by the 1994 General Assembly.

Public Safety Secretary O. Randolph Rollins said this week he has appointed a task force of law-enforcement specialists to lay the groundwork for legislation aimed at making assault weapons illegal. The task force is to define more precisely what constitutes an assault weapon and issue a report in September, Rollins said.

Rollins said he hopes the panel's recommendations will be the basis of a new law to be signed by the successor to Wilder, whose term expires in January.
