W.VA. MAN BELIEVED DROWNED

The search for a West Virginia man believed to have drowned near the New River's Shumate Falls on Friday afternoon had to be called off because of darkness, police said.

Giles County Police Investigator Willie Lucas said a 43-year-old Mercer County man had been wading in the river around 1:45 p.m.

The man, who could not swim, apparently wandered too far out in the river, Lucas said.

"There's a dangerous undercurrent in that section and a lot of drop-offs," he said. The section is near Glen Lyn, about a half-mile from the West Virginia state line.

Lucas said another man attempted a rescue but failed. He declined to release the name of the missing man pending notification of relatives.
