TERRIERS WIN REGION III TITLE

Senior forward Kevin Niday, celebrating his 18th birthday, scored the winning goal with 20 minutes left as William Byrd defeated Northside 1-0 in the Region III soccer tournament championship game at Lord Botetourt High School in Daleville.

The title is Byrd's fourth in a row and seventh in the eight years of the tournament. Michael Berry recorded the assist, and Jason Criss had 13 saves for the Terriers.

Jason Roberts had 14 saves for the Vikings.

Both teams will advance to the state Group AA quarterfinals, which begin Tuesday. At 7 p.m., Byrd (16-2) plays host to Christiansburg, and Northside (9-8-2) plays at Blacksburg.

\ In other high school soccer:

At Blacksburg, Todd Lyons scored two goals and Chris Evans had four assists as unbeaten Blacksburg (15-0-2) bombed Christiansburg 7-0 for the Region IV Tournament championship. Christiansburg is 11-6-1.

\ BASEBALL: Jason Anderson threw a three-hitter and struck out 15 as Glenvar trounced Covington 5-1 in the championship game of the Pioneer District Tournament at Casey Field in Covington. Anderson also led the Highlanders in batting with three hits and three RBI. Top-seeded Glenvar scored three runs in the first inning and scored again in the second to lead 4-0. The Highlanders made the score 5-0 before the Cougars got a run in the last inning.

Both teams advance to the Region C tournament in Lebanon next week. Covington will face Castlewood at 2 p.m. Wednesday and the winner will play Giles Thursday at 2 p.m. Regular-season champion Glenvar will face the winner of Wednesday's Lebanon-Grayson County contest Friday at 5 p.m. The title game will be played next Saturday at 1 p.m.

\ SOFTBALL: Amber Vines had three hits and Melissa Markham had two hits and three RBI to lead James River (18-3) past Glenvar 12-5 in the championship game of the Pioneer District Tournament. Sherry Allison (16-2) went the distance for the Knights, who face Floyd County at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Floyd County in a Region C Tournament game. Glenvar will face Castlewood at 4:30 Tuesday at Floyd.
