WEEKEND COLLEGE PLANNED

Virginia Western Community College and the YWCA announced plans Friday for a weekend college degree program to begin this fall.

The program would give students a chance to pursue a general studies associate in science degree by attending classes at one of the YWCA centers in Roanoke or Salem.

An open house for prospective students is scheduled Thursday beginning at 5:45 p.m. at the YWCA center on First Street Southwest.

College counselors will be on hand to discuss admissions requirements and financial aid. The classes likely will be held on a Friday evening-Saturday morning schedule, said Sally Howard, communications and marketing coordinator for the YWCA.

Classes in college composition and U.S. history have been scheduled. A third class will be offered, but its content won't be decided until after student input is received from the open house, she said.

The college and YWCA already collaborate on classes. A summer program started in mid-May, but the weekend degree concept is new for them.

Charles Downs, president of Virginia Western, said he was especially interested in how the weekend college can serve nontraditional students.

The classes are open to men and women.
