STATE WANTS INJUNCTION AGAINST NORFOLK COLLEGE

The state attorney general on Friday asked for an injunction against Commonwealth College, saying the school is violating Virginia's Consumer Protection Act by deceiving its students.

In a 14-page complaint filed in Norfolk Circuit Court, Attorney General Stephen D. Rosenthal asked for the injunction to stop the alleged violations.

He also is seeking civil fines - up to $1,000 per violation - and refunds for students dating back to 1988. Together, those penalties could total hundreds of thousands of dollars, Rosenthal said.

The state's 18-month investigation turned up alleged violations ranging from the way the college advertises its degree program to its failure to provide courses and job placement promised to potential students.

Even the school's name, the suit alleged, falsely suggests it is connected to Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. - Associated Press
