WARNER: NAVY SHOULD BUILD SUBS FOR SALE

Sen. John Warner said Friday he has asked the Navy to consider building diesel submarines and suggested they could be sold to foreign navies.

The Navy, however, has long opposed such overseas sales, arguing that the United States must protect its presumed advantage in submarine technology.

Warner, R-Va., said he sent a letter dated May 26 to Adm. Frank Kelso, chief of naval operations, asking that the Navy take a new look at diesel submarines.

Newport News Shipbuilding and General Dynamics Corp.'s Electric Boat division in Groton, Conn., currently are the only U.S. builders of submarines. They produce only nuclear-powered boats.

Both yards have been hard-hit by the recent plunge in U.S. spending on submarines. Those yards could benefit if the Navy decides to build diesel submarines, Warner said. - Associated Press
