TEACHER OF THE WEEK

CAROL COLLIER Fifth grade South Salem Elementary School

Carol Collier says she's red, white and blue to the core. And her patriotism and love of country are not just because she has a son in the Marine Corps, she said. "Patriotism is an important part of me. I try to instill in my classes that freedom is something to stand up for and not take for granted," Collier said.

Collier said she especially enjoys teaching social studies and current events. She tries to relate history to current events as a teaching tool and to influence her pupils to become involved as citizens when they grow up. "They need to learn that history at one time was somebody's current event," she said.

"Mrs. Collier is a good teacher because she makes us work hard and then gives us free time. We give her lots of respect because of that," said the pupils who nominated Collier, a 14-year teaching veteran.

Married and the mother of two sons, ages 23 and 5, and a 15-year-old daughter, Collier enjoys reading the newspaper in her free time. She is active in PTA and in her church.
