Unions advise pact with Alcoa, Reynolds

CLEVELAND - Leaders of two unions representing 17,000 aluminum industry workers on Tuesday recommended that their members accept three-year contract agreements with Alcoa and Reynolds Metals Inc.

Under the proposed contracts, workers will be paid 50 cents more an hour and be given a pension increase of $2 a month per year of service. The pension increase is in addition to similar one negotiated when the old contract - which was to have expired May 31, 1992 - was extended a year.

The proposals also require employees to bear a share of the health care costs.

The presidents of the affected United Steelworkers union locals voted Tuesday to accept the tentative agreement and present it to the rank and file for a ratification vote Thursday, union spokesman Gary Hubbard said. The Aluminum, Brick and Glass Workers Union bargaining council also voted to recommend the agreement to its membership. - Associated Press
