PULASKI BACKS CANCER CENTER

Pulaski Town Council went on record Tuesday as supporting an application by Pulaski Community Hospital for a public-need certificate to build a cancer treatment center.

The vote was unanimous.

Councilman Don Crispin noted that the county Board of Supervisors had not endorsed the project last week, after several tie votes. "I feel that they were wrong and I was very disappointed," he said.

Mayor Gary Hancock said the cancer center, if approved by the state, would serve other counties besides Pulaski. It also would provide new jobs, improve the tax base and boost economic development efforts, he said.

"I think we all agree that Pulaski Community Hospital is a tremendous asset in our community," he said.

Council also voted 6-2 to seek proposals from consultants to study the town's water fund, which is headed for a deficit.

Andrew Graham and Crispin voted against it, saying the study would only delay the need to raise water rates. Hancock said the study would not keep council from raising water rates before its completion.

If a consultant is hired to make a study, council would ask that it be completed in time for council's first July meeting.
